How to Read an Alexander McQueen Clothing Tag
Alexander McQueen clothing can carry several different identifiers on the same care label. The first step is to identify what kind of code you are reading. A production code, article/style reference, size, regulatory number, barcode, QR/RFID/NFC element and retailer inventory number do not mean the same thing, and none should be treated automatically as a unique serial number.
1. Find the production line
For ready-to-wear, Sui Generis uses the following research-backed working map:
| Observed prefix | Line | Evidence level |
|---|---|---|
| UP54 | Alexander McQueen mainline menswear | Strong repeated physical-tag observation |
| UP55 | Alexander McQueen mainline womenswear | Museum verified |
| UP59 | McQ womenswear | Strong repeated physical-tag observation |
| UP60 | McQ menswear | Strong repeated physical-tag observation |
| JP54 | Later Alexander McQueen menswear | Observed successor prefix |
| JP55 | Later Alexander McQueen womenswear | Observed successor prefix |
Alexander McQueen has not published a public decoder defining the literal meanings of UP or JP, the exact transition date, or the formal meaning of every trailing number. JP is not a country-of-origin code: examples carrying JP54 and JP55 are documented as Made in Italy.
2. Read the four-digit year as production evidence
A museum-documented Spring/Summer 2010 women’s dress carries UP55 2009 01060, showing why the four-digit year should not simply be copied into the collection-season field. A Spring item may have been produced in the previous calendar year. A Fall/Winter item may carry the same calendar year. Treat the year as a dating clue that creates a candidate collection window.
The National Gallery of Victoria also documents a 2004 women’s pre-collection coat marked UP55 2004 00183. Together, these museum records strongly support UP55 as a womenswear production-line identifier and YYYY as production-year evidence.
3. Read the article/style reference separately
On the same museum labels, separate strings such as 240088 QV469 0019 and 133046 Q1019 0611 appear alongside the UP line. These article/style references are the better route to exact product identification. Search the complete string, then confirm silhouette, material, color, gender line and collection against a runway, catalog, museum, official product or reliable retailer archive.
4. Digital identifiers
Alexander McQueen’s official privacy policy states that some products may contain unique printed codes or small devices such as RFID or NFC tags used for fraud prevention, supply-chain control, unauthorized-sale detection, authenticity confirmation and product information. That does not mean every authentic McQueen item has NFC, or that a scannable tag proves authenticity by itself.
Authentication rule
A code match supports identification; it does not authenticate an item on its own. Compare the label family, article reference, production information, materials, construction, hardware, country-of-origin information and the collection the piece is supposed to belong to.
