Jil Sander

Jil Sander

Jil Sander established her house in Hamburg in 1968 and presented its first women’s collection there in 1973. Her restrained clothes offered a new form of luxury for working women: clean shapes, careful construction and fabric quality took precedence over conspicuous decoration. A Milan showroom opened in 1994, and the house presented its first men’s collection in Milan in January 1997. These milestones help distinguish the founder’s design vocabulary from the interpretations of later creative directors.
