About Sui Generis

San Francisco • Twenty years this October

A life in
fashion.

Before Sui Generis was a destination, it was a shared instinct: that exceptional fashion deserves to be discovered, understood, and lived in again.

Begin the journey
Chapter I • Guadalajara

Where it
began.

In 1994, only months after meeting, Miguel López and Gabriel Yáñez began buying and selling garments in Mexico. At Irala Moda in Guadalajara, an engineer and a photographer found a common language in clothing—and the first expression of a style that was entirely their own.

Chapter II • Two paths, one vision

The craft
behind the eye.

Miguel • The art of service

Luxury, learned from within.

From MaxMara to Ralph Lauren in downtown San Francisco, Miguel mastered the rituals of luxury retail: discernment, presentation, and the rare pleasure of being truly known as a client.

Gabriel • The art of discovery

History, found in the details.

Gabriel immersed himself in vintage and secondhand designer menswear, developing an archivist’s eye for provenance, construction, and the singular pieces collectors never forget.

Chapter III • San Francisco, 2006

Sui Generis opens
on Church Street.

A small vintage store became a gathering place for people who saw fashion differently. The name said everything: sui generis—of its own kind.

Today • One remarkable collection

A store with
a point of view.

European maisons. Japanese avant-garde. Exceptional vintage. Emerging voices. Every piece is authenticated, considered, and chosen for more than its label.

Our stylists bring the collection to life with a deeply personal kind of service—whether you are searching for the piece that changes an evening or placing a treasured garment into its next chapter.

“The archive matters. But it is the people who bring the pieces to life.”
Miguel, Gabriel & the Sui Generis team
sui generis
Latin. Of its own kind; unlike anything else. A name for singular pieces, independent style, and a San Francisco story still being written.
